Ben,

In deference to the VVT's , the variable valve timing units, unless you are operating in sustained temps above 100 deg. F, I would suggest 5w30 synthetic oil. So if traveling about and temps are more moderate, the VVT's will be happier with that viscosity. If it stays really hot, move up to the 5w40.

In practice, we have found that while cars with oil coolers do have a larger total capacity, you really don't drain that out when changing the oil. Consequently, with or without, the refill quantity works out very much the same.

Another hitch in the git-a-long is the fact that the sump quantity was raised by one liter right after the launch of the 2000 models. Some confused this with the oil cooler differences. Turns out some instances of oil starvation were noted when doing some 'spirited driving' with the then pretty new V8's. To counter that they added one liter to the sump and changed the dipsticks accordingly.

Some earlier V8's were retrofitted with the new dipstick and some weren't. Because of that, I have basically advised folks to fill 8 Qts at an oil change with a filter. Once the car is driven, check the oil according to the manual and note where it is on YOUR dipstick. From then on, accept that level as the new 'Full'. That system has worked very well ever since.

Cheers,
