96 XJ12 48,000 miles, on the way to work engine light came on but all gauges were normal, everything seemed fine, couple miles later we went from running smoothly to silence, no hesitation, no loss of power, no chugging, just the sound of coasting to the side of the road. Checked engine position sensor and it's ok. Hooked up a OBD2 code reader and get "unable to establish link with the vehicle" reading. Arrggg!!! Any idea's on what the problem with the establishing the link could be? Car is OBD2 compliant. What protocaol is Jaguar using to transmit data? Any ideas on why the car went from running to silence in a nano second?

sounds totally like an electrical failure to me and i have no experience with the '96, much less a 12 cylinder. Sensors, Relays, Fuses, all are suspect, Battery Cables, Starter cable, Ignition components, the Coil(s) may have expired.
