I have taken my 96 XJS for emissions testing (live in Illinois) but the facility cannot read my system. I don't "Fail" It just says "Reject.not ready." After talking to many different mechanics I have been told that since I had a new battery installed last year, I have to "re-initialize" the system monitoring. All mechanics agreed that normal driving will accomplish this, however they say that Jaguars take longer than other cars. Well 9 months later, alot of driving and 7 more attempts at the emissions test stations, it's still "Not Ready". I have had the car on scanners showing system pass - no codes - no lights. Any thoughts?

There is a specific driving routine that needs to be done to get the OBD to reiniate after a battery disconnect. Your Jaguar dealer or mechanic should be able to get you a copy. It mostly includes driving X many miles at a certain speed and then stopping and starting, speeding up, slowing down and driving some more, etc, ect. Rather like doing the Hokey Pokey.

There are many different makes and models (Volvo,Nissan,Ford, ect.) that for some unknown reasons can not pass OBD even though no fault codes show up and only certain systems show not ready w/ the scanner. Check with the Motor Vehicle Dept. to see if your model shows up on the list for a waiver of this part of the inspection. Even if it hasn't been listed for this problem, take all your paperwork documenting the scan results over the last 9 months to request a waiver.

If the above doesn't do it, register the car in another county or even a different state which does not require the OBD testing.

Good Luck
