That's correct! All 2013 and later models with the new 8 speed ZF transmission, with the exception of the 2.0L Turbocharged 4 cyl., are equipped with the new Intelligent Stop/Start feature. It stops the engine at lights, etc. as long as requirements for the battery, heater or air conditioner do not override it. For instance, on a 90 deg. day the need for the A/C to operate will negate the Stop/Start function, as will a battery sensed as not fully charged.

After a 72 day build I picked up my F Type in August. BRG, Red Top and Blk 19's (traded in an '11 CTS V). Driving home from the dealer I stopped at a light and the engine shut down. Having been in the car all of 5 minutes I didn't realize that the "Eco" was engaged and first thought was" no not this quick". While at first it is a bit strange to be sitting at a light with the motor not running, the restart is instantaneous and a simple push of the Eco button turns the system off. All in all the car turns heads in a town (Las Vegas) where beautiful cars are quite common.

First road trip was across the Mojave on I-15 and through the winding hills surrounding Ramona, CA. The 8spd is a dream and handling was brilliant and with top down I really enjoyed the "Cat Growl Exhaust".

Bill, next time Carol says you're fat just remind her that every nice house has a big bay window. You can try the one about needing a heavy hammer to drive a big nail but they have answers for that one...

George, mine gets grayer by the day! They do make stuff for that, at least the commercials say so.... not that I would know personally, just sayin' ;>))

Garfield, you had to go there, eh? I liked you better when you just said I was young! Actually, I prefer to call that pooch my "tool shed." My wife says I'm fat..... ;>))

Bill,
The little poch in the front says your not a youngster, but unless you have a long gray beard and long gray hair, carry a seven foot walking staff, wear long flowing robes and sand sandles, although I'm not quite that old, you can't be anywhere near my age, so your young.............

Enjoy the new Jag.

Holy crap.........

A picture of a younger man in a dress shirt and pressed slacks with nice shoes. What is this world coming to.

Where are the torn jeans, tank shirt and flipflops--todays average discusting dress wear?

Beautiful car however...........

Pete, I measured where the hitch would need to be height-wise for the tongue of the horse trailer to be able to attach. I'm afraid it would poke out about mid-way up the boot lid. I'm not sure if Jaguar would honor the warranty with that modification. ;>)

My two cents; A while back I did the Jaguar Alive thing here in So, Fla. and got a good taste of the whole new Jag line. The 550 HP models were awsome in power and handled like like the best sports cars I've ever driven , but much more comfortable and with a better ride. Like some others opinions. the F-type didn't float my boat looks wise but then I've always liked coups much better as far as looks go. If I had the means to buy a new one I'de still wait for the F coup to come out. The XKR's of the 8 or 9 year old ones are more in my league, however my E-type still continues to thrill me, and my dayley driver, a Mini, is always a kick . Most of my friends are in love with old American big V8's and think English Iron is crap. What do they know? The different opinions are what makes races and fun, enjoy them all............Don Hilston

Gorgeous Bill. Don't go fitting a tow hitch on the back for Carol's horse box.

I'm not worried about the car, but the hitch would rip off the trailer if you put your foot down, or the horses would fly out the back door and wind up on their butts in the road, wondering what happened :-)

I just took delivery on a 2013 XF S/C with the start/stop tech. It is a bit disconcerting at first, but after a little while, it's okay. If sitting too long, or if the battery charge gets a bit low, the engine fires right back up. It can easily be disabled. Like Pete said, I'll wager in 5-10 years, all new cars will have this.
As far as the F-type, it stimulates ALL of my senses in a good way. I say way to go Jaguar! I realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it's a home-run for me. I'd have one in my garage in a New York minute, but the practicality of a back seat and a boot steered me to the XF. And that 5.0 S/C in the XF blows the doors off my brother's 5 series BMW... so sad for him!

Brian/Peter....
Absolutely correct on all counts. Jaguar is a business intent on selling new cars. Target market is everything; and the reality is, though we are a National Club for the marque, with few exceptions, most of our membership will not be buying NEW cars. Yes, some of us do, but most don't.
Over the years I have had numerous conversations with my own members; they ask why does Jaguar do this, or not do that? I ask them, are you going to go buy a new car if they did? Usually the answer is no. My answer then is, their market research has already told them that, and that's why they don't do such and such. Unfortunately, they have think like a business man, instead of a classic car lover.

On the Stop/Start and other features, Peter is also right. More and more mandates are probably coming. Stop/Start is widely used in Europe, and will likely be legislated there soon. Since they [car makers] have to produce it for that market, they can use it here for 'points' to offset some of our higher fuel consumption cars like the XKR/XFR. It's all part of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy [CAFE] game the manufacturers have to play here in the States. So, a lot of the stuff Jaguar is doing is not so much because they want to, it's because the handwriting is in the wall and they know it. Thank you EPA! [that's facetious, by the way]

I'm not really a fan of the Stop/Start feature, I'd be just as happy if it went away. But I can tell you that if you knew all that went into it, how it's done, and all the technology behind it, you'd recognize it as genius. Literally.

My two cents.......

Very sensible commentary Brian. Feelings, preferences, tastes etc. are not something to be disputed - they just 'are'. It is fair comment to express them here, because forums - like club houses - are all about shooting the breeze. It just gets a little wearing when personal feelings/preferences are aired as if they were the only valid ones and as if 'evidence' existed for the superiority of one over the other. Joey could save himself a lot of keystrokes by just posting his name - we know that whatever follows will just be variations on a theme.

Outside this forum, I'm not sure I've read a bad review in any of the press reports, although there have obviously been criticisms because reviewers/testers can't afford to like every single thing about a car they test. It just seems odd to read the most damning commentary on a Jaguar web site, but then your point about demographics clearly applies...

It is quite possible, and may already have been decided - that stop-start tech will become a legal necessity along with DSC, ABS, electric headlamp adjustment and a dozen other gizmos we oldies would just as soon do without. Currently the following systems are being considered by safety authorities:

Blind Spot Monitoring
Lane Support Systems
Speed Alert Systems (ISA)
Autonomous Emergency Braking
Attention Assist
Automatic Emergency Call (eCall)
Precrash systems
Vision Enhancement Systems

I wouldn't bet against them being compulsory by the end of the decade, and that is without taking into account the emissions legislators who will probably ensure manual transmissions go the way of carburettors.

Back to the original subject, sort of. . .

I've not been in a new F-Type using this technology, but I have been in BMWs that use it. It's nothing short of remarkable. You'd think that it would be like having your engine crank like it does when you start it every time you stop for more than a few seconds, but it isn't. The whole process is seamless and very nearly silent.

As for whether one likes or doesn't like a given model, well, each to his or her own taste. Personally, I think Jaguar made a huge mistake when they ditched the updating of the eternally classic and beautiful "cigar" XJs, but it seems that there are plenty of buyers who don't feel that way. While it would be nice if a given brand that I liked were to cater to my tastes, I'm hitting the age demographic (over 50) where I'm no longer the target market. Even if that weren't the case, the automobile industry is one of those where styling changes for the sake of styling changes is built right in and will never go away.

Joseph you are right in that statement but we ALL understood some time ago you did not like it. That was clear so why the weekly update of why you do not like it?

George/Steven, We are all true Jag lovers and friends, I drove it, didn't like it.
Its not hitting the bell at all IMHO.
All brands today are lacking creativity, just saddened that jag couldn't start something new to strive for.
One fact though, none of us have pulled out the check book. That's the real problem.
Its not worth fighting about, its just disheartening that its not what wish it could be.......
Well, Aston is stirring some mid engines, lets see what happens their.

Steve Petry:

My opinion of the F Type is what it is. I don't need to drive it to know I don't like the styling. No matter how good the car drives, if it doesn't pass the aesthetic hurdle then it simply doesn't make a difference. I've had great driving cars that, over time, I couldn't live with the interior, so off it went. With the exterior, if it doesn't grab me from the get go, then what's the point?

Every time I look at an F Type, I just think, meh. It simply fails on the excitement level for me. Now the XK180, THAT was an exciting looking design concept. Jaguar had the opportunity to give us a real successor to the E Type, but this isn't it. A puffed up Miata it appears to me.

Sorry if my opinion doesn't mesh with 'everyone'. And driving the F Type simply won't result in me changing it any time soon.

Steve Petry--are you suggesting that prior to an opinion one should actually know what they are speaking of? Over the course of the many posts from a few that would rob almost all of the thunder. BTW I totally agree with you!

Suggest watching the Top Gear segment on the F-Type. The curmudgeonly and critical Jeremy was completely smitten.

I'm in. Now, all I need is $100,000 in small, unmarked bills ...

Best, Harold ...

WOW! Lots of snap judgements here. I would discourage anyone from pre-judging the F-Type until they have engaged ALL the senses. Just looking at the car, and maybe opening the boot ain't gonna cut it. [side note: I'd wager more fits in the F-Type boot than the E-Type, but that's not what these cars are about]
Secondly, what constituted a sports car in 1961, and what constitutes one today, are vastly different things. Remember, Jaguar hasn't really had a TRUE sports car SINCE the E-Type.

You need to sit in it, drive it, feel it, hear it and experience it. I haven't seen a doubter yet that didn't change their tune once they did. Even had one bloke who, by his own admission, had been searching for a sports car that flipped his switch for two years. He wanted a car to drive and take to the track a couple times a month. He'd been through Porsche, Mercedes, Aston Martin and I think Corvette. He drove the first Firesand Orange V8S we had, and it went home with him.

The F-Type isn't for everyone, but if you truly want a sports car, don't discount it until you've been in the driver's seat. It's quite an experience.

Cheers,

Stop/start tech or no, the F-type is a miss for me. Just uninteresting as a design. It has no WOW factor. Its biggest failing is that its side profile is much too tall for its length. It ends up looking like a short, stubby car. It may have pace, but is short on space (look in the boot) and lacks any kind of grace.

Sorry, Jaguar, try again....

Dick, I wish you all the best in your purchase, too bad it completely missed its intended market. Here in New York on Long Island , The City or the Hamptons, not a one my friend.
When they featured the entire build on speedvision on dream cars week, the body in white was under 750 lbs or so, once all the RETRACTABLE AIR VENTS, Plastic gab bars, and all the rest was added it is close to 4,000 lbs.
I love Jag more than most, Hold out till October, your going to get a GREAT DEAL on the sticker......

There is a simple switch to disable the system so the engine stays on all the time if it bothers you. The system is very unobtrusive to the point of not even noticing it working. The car is rather impressive to the point it is on my soon to acquire list. I also have an E-Type, an Aston Martin and a Ferrari among other cars and still find the F-type an impressive automobile.

To bad another reason not to buy, hey when Im stuck in New York traffic for hours and the starter keeps kicking over and over and over, how long till it burns out?
Remember this was to be a return to a basic etype form of a drivers car .
Seems way more complicated then that......
Too bad.
Looks like Im sticking with my ETYPE and my ASTON MARTIN.
