Need Photo of an original XK 120 Black Tool Roll

Here are shots of the Stone Guard and the Blanking Plate.The XK 120 parts book that George Camp has assembled, pages 33-34, shows the chassis numbers that the Air Scoop was fitted to. Too numerous to list here and the file would be too big to post and make it readable.

Hopefully Roger Payne and I will find time to finish our Tool Book and it will explain lots of this in detail.

Thanks! I do know about the grease gun - Dad has the (*an*?) original clipped in it's proper place under the bonnet.

The blanking plate you mentioned - is that the black rectangular piece to the left of the bleeder hose tin in Bob's second photo?

Thanks also for letting me know about the leather strap to hold it in place - I don't think that's in Dad's car. I'll have to check...

I'm a bit surprised that the tin and cam tool can be rolled up in the roll. Although, looking at Bob's pics, I can kind of see how that could work...

I thinking the question you are asking is, "Does everything get rolled up in the tool roll?' Well, No. The grease gun gets stowed under the bonnet on the left fenderwell.

The Bleeder Tin and the cam tool, and for that matter, the Blanking Plate used to replace the cooling grill on SOME front brake drums, can be rolled up in the roll. I am sure Bob can shoot an example. The rolled up tool roll is then stowed in the boot forward of the black gas filler neck and held in place by a leather strap fastened to the body.

At the risk of asking a really dumb question, with some of those bulky tools (monkey-type wrench, cam locking tool, round bleeder hose tin, etc.), how exactly does one "roll" up the tool roll??

Bob, yours with the squared off pockets is 100% original and correct. The darker green I have seen and I think I even have one, but the pockets are slanted and not correct, almost a good repro. I think the material is too soft too, not really canvas.

Here is a photo from my restoration file of what may be an XK120 black canvas tool roll - not sure.

Here is a picture of my 1952 XK120 tool roll (dark green canvas) - XK120 is still under restoration. I had to put restoration on hold while I re-write my company's software (www.restaurantplus.com). My tool kit has the stubby open end wrenches.

Thanks very much for the good info. My Dad confirmed that this green tool roll is just something he bought about 15 years ago to keep in the car. It's never been a "serious" concours car (Driven class only), so not a huge deal, but someday I might like to find one like you pictured, those short pockets make sense for the couple of small tools just visible on the far left of my pic.

That is not the correct tool roll but it has been around for a long time. From my research it is just something that someone made years ago and is still being made.

The correct green canvas tool roll, and this is from Roger Payne, is similar to the black one and has the two short squared off pockets.

I have the correct green fabric but have not had time to make a sample up.

Steve, Thanks very much. The tool roll is the green canvas, but does not have the two short pockets, as in your photo above. The two shortest pockets are stitched on the same diagonal as all the rest of the pockets. FWIW. I hope this makes sense....

I'll try to post an image at a later date.

The GREEN tool roll with the two short pockets is correct for the 120. The 140 and the E have the black roll with the diagonal pockets.

Hmmmm.... I guess this means the green canvas tool roll which came with my Dad's '54 120 (and has the straight diagonal line for all the pockets) is not original to that car then?
