according to my friend Clark, who owns a XJ-40, here's some instructions:

The micro-switch is the switch that controls the fans in the heater-A/C
console. Over time, the micro-switch has a tendency to lose metal to metal
contact. So, one must pull the wood "ski slope" around the shifter and pull
the radio/heater control unit out. It is not difficult. Then, usually a
shot of WD-40 will resolve the issue. If more extensive work is needed, it
can often be resolved by checking the contacts and re-soldering the wires.
The switch can be replaced by a common Radio Shack micro-switch for under $5 and the problem will be resolved for another 15 years. Whilst in there,
they should re-solder the clock connections for that has a tendency to go as well.
