If you posted correctly you said its a series 2 correct? There is a starter relay on the passenger side, it a shed relay to bypass everything and give the starter all the current, once the key switches back,it cuts the relay out, they crap out ALOT. Its the little metal can under the hood on the passenger side, there should be a brown wire on it, check if they are loose, sometime one falls off. This is only on a series 2. Others for the series 3 but im not farmiliar with those....
