I'm posting on behalf of a friend who's 1966 2+2 is nearing completion after a lengthy total restoration. The problem he is facing is due to a flaky decision by a former mechanics not to overhaul his running original engine (#7E52479-9 3 carbs) but to assemble one from bits, and now his intake manifold does not bolt on anymore.

The block he has in the car is a 4.2l (cast # C2882:FF, stamped # not visible, probably hidden under a non-stock motor mount), the head that was put on has # GL598, stamped BH7476-8. The bolt pattern does not match with his original carbs manifold, and the ports are more widely spread on the head than on his original manifold (just a bit in the center, about 1/4" for the next two, and about 1/2" for the two outer ports).

The question is: what intake manifold can be used for this head (hopefully compatible with his original 3 carbs, but anything to get a first crank of the engine would be a bless at this point)?

any hint or lead will be highly appreciated! thank you,

Nic

I am restoring a 1970 E-Type that I acquired with no engine. I bought a good 1970 XJ6 Engine. I have a refurbished set of triple SUs with a new manifold and knowing that I would need a compatible head I found a triple carb head out of a 1967 E-Type . All have benn magnufluxed etc. and the manifold and carbs match the head. The machine shop where the engine is being totally rebuilt called me however and said the block had two water holes in the head where the head had none. All of the head holes were matched in the block. They said it would probably not be a problem to weld the two extra holes shut and fit the head, but they suggested I check if I felt uneasy about it. Does anyone have any experience with this situation?
Thanks,

Hello again this is Brian,
I have just gone through a couple of rare parts catalogues and have
found that the head is from a latter 2.4 litre MK 2 sedan. The prefix's
for these engines are :BG 1001- BG 9999 ,
BH 1001- BG 9999 ,
BJ 1001 to end of series.
The 240 sedan has its own series of engine numbers. This would place
your engine probably around mid to late 1965.It is not compatable with
the triple carb manifold of either the 3.8 or 4.2 cars. You could put it on
a MK 1 with electrical tach drive or even the MK 2.
You seem to be in a pickle as someone fooled you into buying something that won't work. You will probably find that the camshafts have a different profile as well. There are a couple of solutions to the problem but you will have to weigh the costs involved.

Hello this is Brian calling from Toronto,
I have owned at least one hundred different Jaguars over the past 30 odd years. The problem seems to be with the serial numbers that you are quoting for the cylinder head.I have all of the parts catalogues and the only one that mentions a B in its prefix is the 3.4 litre MK 7.But there
is no second letter prior to the first number. On the intake side of the head, are there any plugs along the side of the head? Also, the machined surface onto which the intake manifold fits,is the forward end rounded as
though a vertical milling machine was used to machine that surface? If it were a straight port head then the forward end of that surface would be squared off to accept the rectangular shaped intake manifold.
On the block you should look in the proper place for the serial number.
If you are looking along the side of the block that the oil filter housing fits onto, look on the flange just in from the oil filter housing base.To
explain better try looking downwards,as though you were looking into the bores but on the outside of the engine. The number will be facing towards you.Forget about the engine mount area as it is the wrong place to look.
When you find that number please forward it to me at:brianscatsatsympatico.ca and I will look it up for you.
