I am thinking of replacing my recently rear-ended XJ6 with an XJS. Not that it will matter a great deal in my decision making process, but, what kind of MPG can I expect from an XJS?

Doug;

The last 6 of the VIN are: 138504.

The tenth digit on the VIN is: H so the VIN says that it is an 87 and the sill plates are plastic.

It gets tricky. What's the build date? Last 6 of the vin ?

The whole "model year" thing gets confusing, especially with USA market XJSs.

The USA *1988* model year started in Feb '87 with vin 139051, if that gives you some reference.

The lattice wheels became available in 3/88 for the 1989 model year (again, in USA terms). Of course, wheels are easily swapped so they cannot be used as a definitive indicator.

An "88 model year" (USA) will have stainless instead of plastic sill plates, heated seats, power lumbar adjustment on the seats, heater outside mirrors and windshield washer nozzles, and a few other things that escape my memory. An '87 "model year" won't have these features.

The USA/North American vin tag on the windshield pillar will have "H" as the tenth digit if it is an '87. An '88 will have "J".

Doug,

This is the odd thing, she has the 88' lattice wheels, and on the rear where it should have the "HE" it has V-12. When I took it to my local Jag expert, he said that the VIN shows that it was built at the end of the 87' production year. He thinks that it maybe somewhat of an odd ball in that it IS an 87' but has 88' parts and pieces. He even thinks that this color was not offered until 88'.

Might be worth some bucks down the road......who knows.

Guys I bought an 87 XJS that was in LA. I flew down last week to get it and drive her home. According to the onboard computer she averaged about 22 MPG on the freeway at an average speed of about 68 MPH.

I was very pleased.

Here is a pic of her.

The V12 HE is fairly easy on fuel on the highway. If you can keep your foot out of it, 19-21 mpg is fairly easy to achieve....some report even higher.

In town, though, expect 11-13 mpg.

In other words, not that much different than your XJ6
