Where does one find the plug to attach a fault code machine to a '89 XJS convertible.

If the battery is new the process I would follow looks like this:
1) Test voltage on battery: 12.5v or >
2) Check the cables for corrosion
3) Check the ground from the starter
4) Use a screwdriver to short the terminals on the starter to see if it actually turns on it's own
5) Try connecting another car with jumper cables.

My instinct is that it's time for a new starter and step 4 will demonstrate that the starter is dead or good.
