I run a small Porsche / Audi shop and I am relatively unfamiliar with Jags. I have a customer with a 1974 E type, which has several minor issues:

The exhaust system needs replacing. The owner wants a stainless system. Who makes the best system, are there brands to avoid? Are there improved hangers, gaskets etc. that should also be updated?

The transmission has a leak which, appears to be coming from the speedometer sensor. Is this a common problem, does the sensor need replacing or is there a gasket or O-ring that fails?

The windshield seal for the convertible top is old and compressed to the point that it no longer seals properly. What is the best source for a replacement seal?

Recently, the rear brakes mysteriously locked up during a low speed drive around town. After the car sat for several hours, the brakes released and no problems have been experienced since then. On some of the old 356's it is common for the old rubber brake lines to swell shut on the inside with age. Although they appear normal on the outside, they will act as a check valve, allowing the high pressure fluid to apply the brakes but trapping (lower pressure) fluid when the pedal is released. Can this also be a problem with the Jags or is there another common problem?

And insight is greatly appreciated.

I had a '72 V-12 2+2. I put a Dick Ames system on it and it fit perfectly and worked well. Stainless. I have a Dick Ames on my '69 OTS and love it.

The brake problem sounds like the brake line interior layer has separated and is creating a flap. When you step on the brake, pressure builds up and the flap prevents it from returning to the master. It then leaks down over time. As Mike said, change the brake lines. I put stainless lines on my '72, front and rear, and it made a nice difference in the feel. The Goodridge lines worked well.

Best is a tricky word. A very nice fitting exhaust for the V12 is Hayward and Scott in the UK, but oh-so-pricey. You can try Dick Ames, they carry both Langford and Falcon systems, which are also good. Just google the names, or contact me off line for the links.

It's not a sensor, it a right angle adapter. I can't recall if there's an O-ring there, but it sound logical. All Jaguars leak a bit, you never can quite dry them out.

Seals and misc parts. The usual dealers are Terry's Jaguar, XK's Unlimited, and SNG Barrat, and there are plenty of others. You can google or find them in Hemmings, or write me offline for links.

You have a good handle on the brake problem...my first step would be to replace the hoses.
