Warren,
On my FHC 680555, where the outside door skin turns under, and makes a horizontal joint with the (vertical) panel next to the door sill, there are 6 screws holding the seam together. There is no indication that either, the bottom of the outer door skin or the door panel adjacent the door sill, is welded.
I have included one picture of the area to make certain we're talking about the same things.

I've just looked at 670111 a 49 convertible and A815466 a 55 Coupe and they are both attached by screws. Jaguar affectionado and etc.
