I don't have an answer for you, Frank, but I heard of a Ser III XJ6 owner with almost exactly the same issue....where plugging/unplugging the CTS would allow the engine to start. Pretty strange. I never herd a resolution.
I'm betting (hoping?) that a new plug-in connector will solve the problem
