I have a '74 OTS E-Type with 46,000 miles. Has anyone had a clutch replaced and offer any advice? 3 mechanics have told me my clutch needs repair. It's starting to jitter a bit when I start off in first, or go in reverse. One mechanic tells me the engine MUST be removed to address the clutch. Another says he can repair it from underneath and charges 1/2 as much. The repair manual also indicates that the engine must be removed.

Another question. While the mechanic is working on the clutch, it would be the perfect opportunity to replace the flywheel with an aluminum version. This should allow the car to move faster from a stopped position. Could there be any negative effects? Does the original flywheel obsorb engine jitter? Would an aluminum flywheel cause the new clutch to wear faster? Other issues???

This clutch can be replaced relatively easily on your car without removing the engine. If the vehicle is in good condition there may be no reason to do any more than the clutch. on the other hand if there are other tasks which need attention, motor mounts leaks etc, then now is the time, but be warned, it may be like opening Pandoras Box! The heavy flywheel gives a much smoother idle and the V12 has sufficient torque so I would not suggest replacement. Jaguar affectionado and etc.

Go with the guy who wants to pull the engine. At this age there are several issues that need addressing (motor mounts etc.) A proper job can not be accomplished by pulling from underneath--if it could the factory would have done it----after all they paid for warranty claims. George Camp
