I am trying to open the trunck of an 1989 XJ6 VDP that I recently purchased. It feels like the previous owner broke a key off in the trunk lock. Is there an alternate release inside the car somewhere?

Thank you

You cannot gain access to the trunk by removing the back seat and the holes for the license plate blots aren't quite big enough to be able to open the boot. you need to push up on the linkage and it's just about impossible to go through the license plate holes with something that will be able to grab the linkage and move it in the direction that will open it. I still think using a hole saw to cut a hole right in the middle of where the license plate goes is the best course of action.

The key will only enter the lock about half way. FYI the lock tumblers feel loose as well, like some one tried to force it open at some point. I figure I will need to replace the lock anyway. Can I get access to the release mechanism through one of the license plate light holes, or by removing the back seat?

There is no trunk release in the glove box. If it is hiding somewhere else, please let me know

Thanks to all!

Isn't there a trunk release in the glove box? I thought my 92 XJ6 had one somewhere. If you have a remote control, you press the unlock button three times and the trunk opens. If you don't have a remote control or a switch in the glove compartment or console, you can use a hole saw and cut a hole in the trunk lid in back of the license plate. The hole only needs to be about an inch in diameter. This gives you access to the linkage that opens the trunk.
