Thanks to each of you for your advice.
I installed the "Green Knob" cut-off on my battery and it works like a charm.
I tried the cigarette lighter "Memory Saver", but it didn't work initially. May have been a bad 9V - I will try another.
However, I don't mind resetting the clock & radio every spring and I don't set the seat positions anyway, so I think I'll just get reaquainted with the fuel injectors once a year and live with it. At least the battery holds its charge now.

The XJ-S cig lighter circuit is not connected to the electrical system when the ignition key is turned off. Anything that tries to provide power through the lighter socket will not work unless you bypass the lighter relay.
