Hi all,

I just mailed in the ballot which came with the latest JJ issue. I know I'm the new kid in town here, but it seems rather pointless when the election is completely uncontested. Am I the only one who feels this way? Have any methods for reducing the election "overhead" been examined for cases of uncontested elections? (or did I just completely misread the ballot??)

Just some thoughts for this morning....

To George Parker--I think my memory is tilted. The only requirement is found in the By-Laws (Article IV section 2). What I think confused me is I have seen very effective letters in the past that followed the format of the Request for a rules change. That is in the library.

George Parker,
Technically - you are correct that an uncontested Nominee for JCNA Regional Director -(OR for ANY Elected position)- is "de facto" elected at the close of the nomination period - BUT as George Camp pointed out- the JCNA By-laws require that a Ballot be sent to each JCNA Member for their Vote on the Nominee seeking the position as their Regional Director.
Considering the minimal cost to JCNA now incurred in the tabulation of the Voting results AND the minimal cost and effort on OUR part - (ie 40 cents in postage for each Member to return their "pre-addressed" Ballot) - I firmly believe that this expenditure is justified as an indication of OUR vote-of-appreciation and confidence to the person who has offered to give of THEIR Time, and Expense, and Effort in representing each of US on the JCNA Board-of-Directors.

It is therefore my hope that EVERY JCNA Member will return their "properly marked" Ballot to the JCNA "Ballot-Tabulator" - at the address printed on the Ballot !!

George a lot of the by laws are old when mail was the way it was done--it would seem odd to me if a by law amendment was proposed by a current BOD member. Perhaps you might submit a proposal? The form can be found in the library.

George,

Thanks very much for the detailed answer. My only thinking/suggestion would be a by-law amendment to allow - ONLY in the case of *COMPLETELY* uncontested elections - the current Board of Directors to accept by acclimation the candidates on the ballot. Send a notification with the Jag Journal that, barring any protest within, say, 30 days, those on the ballot will take office. This, without ever sending out a ballot. If any one of the regions is contested, then send the ballot, as we have just done.

I agree, a cost of $100 or so is not much - but admittedly, I hadn't expected it to be that low.

Thanks again for the information - very much appreciated.

George the election is required by the by laws pure and simple. In normal elections for positions to include Senators there is still a requirement for a ballot. As far as reducing the costs yes a lot has been done. A few years ago these ballots would have gone to a CPA and the results tabulated--for about $500. The by laws do not require a CPA but rather a "person of good quality" that is not a member of JCNA. The By-Laws also require the ballots to go to an address not of any JCNA member. We use the same postal drop box that we did for the JJ survey and many other things. A Notary will count and attest to the ballots and report to the Chairman of Elections. As far as the paper ballot is concerned it is an attachment to the JJ that is free! The insert would have had your address on it so the back side is used--hence free! The current JCNA administration has done everything possible to reduce costs and hold services to higher standards. If you have suggestions keep them coming but much of what is done is simply in compliance with the rules established by the clubs--or at the end--you. If you wish you could read the by laws and see if you think there could be changes --submit them and they will be presented for a vote. As far as to the exact "overhead" for complying with the bylaws and holding an election my guess would be that all in the total will be in the $100 area. That is a $400 savings from the past.
