Hello, My name is Eric and I'm in the process of taking ownership of a 93 XJ6. These are beautiful cars and I'm pleased to join your ranks. I'm looking for tidbits of information on known glitches in this model. Electrical, mechanical, etc. The one I'm going for has less than 114000 miles and is a little rough. Rear shocks are shot, rusted behind the gas lid (rusted through to the trunk...how does one allow that to happen!?)and the interior is dirty. The car is a bargain so I'm going for it. I'm handy with a wrench, I presently own 5 cars including an 88 260E Benz and do all my own work. The motor purrs, all the gadgets work and the body is good except for the rusted area. This car sat for 3 months after being driven from Florida. It does have an unsourced thump from the rear but I expect that to be a broken shock and/or mount. I realize this car was neglected and that may lead to other problems down the road but I'm willing to perservere and make it the gem it was designed to be. Any kind words or encouragement and nuggets of wisdom for me?

Check "www.craigslist.com" for autos/trucks and enter keyword Jaguar. You might even check other cities around you, depending on how far you want to travel. There are lots of these cars for sale at really low prices and most are in pretty good shape.

Good Luck,

Fred

If the car is rotted that badly, it's not worth putting money into. As Mr. Brady said, there are plenty of the 1988-1994 Jaguars (XJ40) around that can be found for reasonable prices and I would highly recommend that you not waste your time with this particular car.

These engines like to burn exhaust valves right around 100,000 miles, has this already happened to this car? If not, it more than likely will, the engine will develop a skip and when you do a compression check you will find no compression in one cylinder.

Is the head liner falling down? What is the condition of the leather seats and the floor mats? These are all fairly expensive items to correct and once again, you can find other Jaguars where the interiors have been taken care of and look fine.

The A/C blower units are problems with these cars, do they work? Be sure to check that BOTH of them are operating and that they operate for all speeds. This is the last year (1993) for R12 freon so has it been converted to R134 yet? If not, you'll have to do that and probably change the compressor soon after because pretty much every R12 to r134 conversion I've done on these and other cars results in the compressor failing within the next few years after the conversion.

The heater cores are also problem areas for these cars. First off does the climate control system work properly? If it does work properly, do you smell antifreeze indicating that the heater core is leaking?

Does the central door locking system work, including proper operation of the trunk and gas cap? Do you have the remote entry unit so you can reset the car alarm after you disconnect the battery? Is the "check engine" light on? If so, you should investigate the code that it's throwing and good luck solving any of those problems, you'll need it.
