Has anyone separated the rotor from the hub so that they could get to the bearings without removing the caliper? What tool or combination of tools allowed you to remove the bolts holding the two together?

Reread your post and saw that I didn't answer your question. In reality, it is easier to remove the caliper and then the hub/rotor assembly than it is just to remove the rotor. Just remember that there is a small shim between the steering arm and the caliper that needs to be there. Also remember to us safety wire when replacing the calipers. If you go the rotor only method, remember to mark the placing of the rotor in relation to the hub.

It isn't hard to seperate them, at least in theory. Remove the bolts holding the hub to the rotor and then use a hammer. When reassembling, remove all the rust from the mating surface of the hub. Then, just to be sure, take the hub/rotor assembly to a machine shop and have them true up the rotor with the hub in place.
