During disassembly I was surprised to find the angle strips to which bolt the wheel well forward diaphragms and valences appear to have been secured to underside of bonnet solely with panel adhesive. Appears to be a uniform layer uninterrupted by any spot welds. Can this be? Bloody incredible nothing dropped off into the motorway all these years!

That is the way they are made. Look in your service manual for the correct material. It is still avail.
