I've just purchased a 56 Mk VII and I'm wondering if the car was originally pos or neg ground. Previous owner has it connected as neg, but something's not right as the ammeter goes to "D" on rev...

All help appreciated, as I'm new to Jaguars.

Thx

well no wonder they wanted to sell the car, they forgot to invert the ammeter wires! You just got yourself a treasure. Someone's stupidity is someone else's fortune.
Merry christmas.

Your MKVII was originally positive ground, as you surmised. In order to make the ammeter work properly you simply need to exchange the wires that are on the two studs on the back of the gauge.
