Hello everyone. I have a 1968 420G. This saga started because I had
leaking side diff seals and some other issues, so I have dropped the rear suspension out and removed the differential. I have for a long time wanted to replace the 3.54 diff ratio with something more sensible. I bought a 3.07 center from a series 2, and found that I can't just bolt it in because the brake calliper attachment is different. I can't swap over the stub axles from the 420G, but they won't fit the series 2 housing because the side holes for the stub axle housings are different. So Plan C was to put the 3.07 ring and pinion in my original housing. Now I have found that while the carrier side bearings and the rear pinion bearing are the same size, the front pinion bearing race on the 3.07 pinion is approx 1/4" smaller than the bearing bore in the 420G housing.
And yes, the pinion shaft size is also different. And I can't get a bearing that has the Ser2 inner bore with the 420G outer bore. Has anyone done this sort of thing before and found a solution?
