The Jaguar XK series of grand Touring Coupes and Convertibles, which received revised design details and features for 2012, enter the 2013 model year with a larger array of model choices. Led by the limited-production, 186 mph XKR-S models, the 2013 Jaguar XK line adds the new Touring Coupe and Convertible models that combine an Aero Package with a set equipment level and a new price point for the model line.
Melding classic Jaguar design with lightweight yet highly rigid aluminum construction and near-bespoke finishes and luxury, the 2013 XK models exemplify the Jaguar tradition of offering outstanding performance, agility and value in the premium luxury category.
The XKR-S, the most powerful Jaguar road car ever offered, returns in very limited numbers for 2013, with just 100 Coupes and 100 Convertibles available for the U.S. A 550hp version of the Jaguar supercharged 5-liter V8 engine powers the XKR-S models.
Enhancing value and style, the 2013 XK and XKR models gain 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, with no change in vehicle MSRP compared to the 2012 models with 19-inch wheels. (The 19-inch wheels are standard on the XK Touring models.) A new Portfolio Pack option brings a distinctly custom flavor to the Jaguar XK and XKR, infusing Coupe and Convertible models with an extra dash of opulence and some exclusive features designed for this package.
The Dynamic Pack option, which was introduced for the 2012 XKR Coupe, is now also available on the XKR Convertible. Adapting elements from the XKR-S, the Dynamic Pack equips the XKR models with retuned suspension for even greater handling agility, and in addition adds aerodynamic enhancements and unlocks a higher top track speed of 174 mph6.
The XK, like all Jaguar models, offers a wide selection of exterior and interior finishes, and, for 2013, the Special Order color and trim combinations no longer carry an extra charge. A Jaguar Designer's Choice guide features recommended combinations. The vibrant Racing paints and special color Convertible tops remain available at extra charge.
New Portfolio Pack for XK and XKR
The 2013 XK Portfolio Pack applies the designer's custom touch, offering five recommended exterior colors. Chrome mirror caps, exclusive to the XK Portfolio Pack, and a chrome-mesh grille add gleaming but elegantly restrained bright work. A choice of seven colors for the XK Convertible's soft-top allows further customization.
Inside, the XK Portfolio Pack presents the choice between two exclusive interior themes, Navy and Truffle, each featuring contrast stitching and handcrafted soft-grain leather for the 16-way power-adjustable, heated and cooled front seats and steering wheel. With either theme, the customer can choose between hand-polished Shadow Walnut or Dark Figured Aluminum interior trim.
Overhead, the Portfolio Pack adds a handcrafted leather headliner made by Poltrona Frau of Italy, a feature borrowed from the limited-production XKR-S. Stainless steel pedals and doorsill scuff plates and leather trimmed floor mats complete the package.
New XK Touring Models
Exemplifying the value that Jaguar has always offered, the 2013 XK Touring models bring a new price point to the XK line while retaining a high level of premium luxury, along with all of the performance of the standard XK models. For ordering simplicity, the 2013 Jaguar XK Touring is a single-spec model, with the customer needing to choose only exterior and interior colors.
Standard 19-inch alloy wheels and an Aero Pack give the XK Touring a sporty stance. Inside, standard luxury amenities include bond grain leather, Satin Rosewood veneer interior trim, heated front seats, a 525-watt Jaguar Premium Sound System with Satellite Radio, keyless entry and start, Reverse Park Camera and Parking Sensors, auto-dimming power folding exterior mirrors and a multi-function steering wheel.
XK Design Imbues Modernity with Brand Heritage
The current-generation XK was the first Jaguar designed under Jaguar Design Chief Ian Callum. The long-hood, short-deck theme echoes classic Jaguar sports cars while providing a luxurious 2+2 cockpit and usable luggage space. The 2012 design update gave the Jaguar XK a bolder front appearance with a more aggressive-looking fascia and the brand's signature "J-blade" Xenon headlights.
The standard Xenon automatic headlights include a power wash function and dynamic leveling. Corner lights improve visibility while cornering, which can be further enhanced by optional Active Front Lighting that directs the headlight beam to bend in the direction of the steering for added driver confidence at night. In addition, distinctive LED signature running lights, integrated into the headlights, provide a bold and modern look when the XK is in motion.
The XK Convertible provides a generous 11.1 cubic-foot trunk (with top up), and the Coupe offers 11.7 cubic feet of space, with the added convenience of rear liftback access.
The ultra-high-performance XKR-S gets a racetrack-ready appearance courtesy of a functional aero treatment. The front splitter, rear air diffuser and rear lip spoiler are made from lightweight, high-strength carbon fiber. The broad, vertical side intakes ahead of the front wheels and twin nacelles at the leading edge of the hood combine with the aerodynamic spoilers to reduce lift by 26% and increase directional stability at high track speeds6.
Advanced Aluminum Construction and Engines
Advanced chassis technology, combined with the inherent weight and stiffness benefits of the aluminum structure, allows the Jaguar XK models to shine in the corners while providing a very comfortable ride.
The XK models are based on a lightweight body shell architecture constructed from a combination of pressed, cast and extruded aluminum alloy components. These are riveted and bonded together using aerospace industry techniques adapted for automotive use by Jaguar, and the materials and processes produce a light body shell with very high structural integrity. The structure's strength, rigidity and lightness provide the foundation for both the Jaguar XK's exciting performance and its occupant safety systems.
The low vehicle weight is one reason the 2013 XK Coupe attains an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in highway driving, and why no XK models are subject to the Federal Gas Guzzler Tax2.
The AJ-V8 Gen III 5-liter V8 engines are the most advanced Jaguar has ever produced, and the most powerful ever offered in the XK models. The naturally aspirated version in the XK produces 385hp and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. An XK Coupe can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and has an electronically limited maximum track speed of 155 mph6.
The XKR's supercharged version of this engine produces 510hp and 461 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter available at just 2,500 rpm and sustained through 5,500 rpm. A twin vortex system (TVS) supercharger and twin water-cooled intercoolers are efficiently packaged in the engine's V. The XKR Coupe can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and is electronically limited to a maximum track speed of 155 mph. The optional Dynamic Pack raises this to 174 mph6.
The XKR-S, introduced for 2012, offers the ultimate in XK engine performance, with its specially tuned supercharged V8 producing 550hp from 6,000-6,500 rpm, and 502 lb.-ft. of peak torque available at just 2,500 rpm and sustained through 5,500 rpm.
The XKR-S Coupe can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds and is electronically limited to a maximum track speed of 186 mph6. This same ultimate-performance machine is EPA-rated at 22 mpg in highway driving and carries no Gas Guzzler Tax2.
The all-aluminum four-cam Jaguar V8 engines combine high power with high efficiency, thanks to such technologies as spray-guided direct fuel injection and dual independent variable cam timing. The naturally aspirated version employs a variable intake manifold to help optimize torque across the engine speed range. All XK, XKR and XKR-S models have 15,000-mile or one-year service intervals, with complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first four years or 50,000 miles courtesy of Jaguar
Platinum Coverage3.
Jaguar tuned the XK's exhaust sound for a deep, powerful character befitting a high-performance grand tourer. The XKR-S is additionally equipped with a Performance Active Exhaust system in which valves open at higher speeds to provide an even more powerful note, and this feature is available as an option for the XKR. Also in these models, a special acoustic filter at the rear of the engine, tuned to "tenor C," feeds some intake sound to the cabin under hard acceleration.
All Jaguar XK and XKR models employ an electronically controlled, fully adaptive six-speed automatic transmission with the unique cast alloy JaguarDrive SelectorÔäó as well as the Jaguar Sequential ShiftÔäó function operated by steering-wheel paddles. The transmission is designed to be maintenance-free with "filled-for-life" fluid.
Advanced Chassis Dynamics
In all XK, XKR and XKR-S models, the standard Adaptive Dynamics active damping system optimizes handling agility and ride comfort. The system monitors body movement 100 times per second and wheel position 500 times per second and automatically increases the damping rate as the suspension approaches the limits of its travel. Adaptive Dynamics also controls wheel hop on uneven roads by rapidly varying the damping to move any wheel out of a natural bouncing frequency, benefiting ride comfort, handling and tire grip.
The Jaguar XKR-S was developed at the Jaguar Test and Engineering Centre at the N??rburgring racetrack in Germany. That development work included designing the proprietary software for Jaguar's Adaptive Dynamics to optimize body control, traction, and grip. Compared to the XKR, the XKR-S chassis tuning features 28 percent higher spring rates and 10mm lower ride height.
The Dynamic Pack option added to the XKR Coupe in 2012 is now available for the XKR Convertible, as well, and equips either model with a comprehensive performance upgrade. Special side sills, rear diffuser, lower front splitter and larger rear wing provide the added stability needed for Jaguar to unlock a 17 mph top track speed capability6. The Dynamic Pack further bolsters the XKR's performance credentials by including the XKR-S Adaptive Dynamics and suspension tuning. The package's Vulcan-style 20-inch forged wheels show off the package's red brake calipers.
From the JaguarDrive ControlÔäó interface, the driver can select different modes for Adaptive Dynamics. In Dynamic Mode, Adaptive Dynamics increases body control for a sportier feel and also provides more responsive accelerator pedal reaction and quicker gearshift responses. The Dynamic Stability Control system offers four driver-selectable modes: Normal, Winter, Trac DSC and DSC OFF. Winter Mode yields a more damped accelerator pedal response to provide progressive control in slippery conditions, with different shift settings that delay and soften gearshifts, also for better control on low grip surfaces4.
In XKR and XKR-S models, Adaptive Dynamics operates in tandem with Active Differential Control (ADC) to optimize available traction at each rear wheel, improving acceleration on low-grip surfaces while enhancing cornering ability. The clutch-type electronic differential is operated by an internal electric motor and ball-and-ramp mechanism and transmits torque to the wheel with the most traction. This proactive system differs fundamentally from conventional traction control, which uses the brakes reactively to counteract slip after it has occurred. The ADC goes beyond the capability of mechanical limited slip differentials by actively vectoring torque to improve traction and cornering, especially during spirited driving and in inclement weather4.
Jaguar Luxury
In the previous model year's XK refreshing, the cabin was upgraded with new trim materials including ebony soft-feel paint for the switches, gloss black finish to the center console and phosphor blue halo illumination and ambient lighting. The 2013 XK continues the expanded palette of veneers, color combinations and headliner options to allow customers to further personalize their XK.
Reflecting Jaguar's renowned craftsmanship and attention to luxury detail, the XK interiors are appointed with luxurious soft-grain leather with contrast stitching and offer a wide choice of interior color options. Wood veneers include a Rich Oak option for the XK alongside the classic Burl Walnut for both models. The XK also offers the choice of Ebony or Knurled Aluminum, while the XKR also offers Dark Oak or Dark Mesh Aluminum (see "XK Touring" section for details on that model's finishes).
As in Jaguar XF and XJ models, the XK models greet the driver with a "handshake" sequence. Enter the XK using the standard keyless entry and keyless start system, then press the pulsing start button, and the cast alloy JaguarDrive SelectorÔäó rises from the console. When the engine is stopped, the JaguarDrive SelectorÔäó lowers automatically.
Standard equipment across the 2013 XK range also includes a dual zone climate control system, auto-dimming electro-chromatic power-folding exterior mirrors and front and rear Park Assist with touch-screen visual indicators and rear backup camera.
Heated and cooled front seats with 16-way power adjustment and memory are standard equipment on XK and XKR models; XK Touring and XKR-S models have standard heated front seats. The XKR models have a unique R-style seat design, and XKR-S models feature a Performance seat with additional bolstering. The XKR's instruments emphasize its performance character with red pointers, while all models feature white instrument gauge illumination.
The 2013 XK and XKR Coupe models feature a standard Jaguar Suedecloth headlining (except Touring, which has a Morzine cloth headliner). The XK Convertible's triple-lined fabric roof, which preserves the classic sports car profile and weighs less than a retractable hardtop, can be powered up or down in less than 18 seconds at speeds up to 20 mph. When lowered, the top stores in the bodywork behind the rear seats under a smooth cover. The raised top provides a level of fit that minimizes wind and other road noise even at high speeds. The top's luxurious interior finish is nearly indistinguishable from that of a closed coupe. Seven Convertible top colors are available.
Using the seven-inch touch screen, the driver or front passenger can access functions for the climate control, navigation system, Bluetooth?« mobile connectivity7 and for Jaguar's Portable Audio Interface, which are all standard. The Portable Audio Interface provides iPod?« connectivity and enables connection of other music storage devices through a USB port to the audio system, with full touch-screen control.
The new-for-2013 XK Touring models feature a Jaguar premium audio system, while all other models in the series come equipped as standard with a high-end Bowers & Wilkins audio system featuring 525-watt maximum output, Dolby?« ProLogic?«II Surround Sound, Kevlar?« midrange speakers and aluminum tweeters. SIRIUS?« Satellite Radio is standard on every XK model except the XKR-S Convertible, and includes a three-month trial subscription. The XKR and XKR-S models also include standard HD Radio,
which is optional for the XK models.
Jaguar Safety
All XK models are equipped with front, front side and thorax airbags. Additionally, Jaguar's front head restraint system helps protect against whiplash in the event of a rear impact. The XK Convertible's hidden rollover protection system deploys instantly if sensors identify a risk, helping provide protection for the occupants4.
Jaguar's Emergency Brake Assist is standard. On models equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), the Advanced Emergency Brake Assist uses the ACC radar to help calculate distance from and speed of approach to the vehicle ahead. The system is designed to pre-charge brake-line pressure to help minimize impact speed if a collision is predicted, with an audible warning to the driver4.
