Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum to attend 2013 Challenge Championship
Not many of us can say we have realized our childhood dreams.
Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum has.
Callum will attend the Jaguar Clubs of North America 2013 Challenge Championship
June 13-15 in Richmond, Virginia, a gathering of Jaguar owners and enthusiasts that is
held once every two years.
When he was a schoolboy in Scotland, Callum spotted a new Jaguar XJ6 in a dealerÔÇÖs showroom.
He spent two hours examining it, trying to figure out why it looked so good, and so
unlike the other cars he had seen around town. Young Callum began sketching cars. At age
14, he submitted some of them, along with a letter seeking a job, to Bill Heynes, then engineering
director at Jaguar. Heynes encouraged Callum to attend art school and develop his
talent.
Callum did, obtaining a degree in Industrial Design from the Glasgow School of Art and a
MasterÔÇÖs in Vehicle Design from LondonÔÇÖs Royal College of Art.
Callum then worked for Ford in England, Japan, Italy and Australia, serving
at one time as the Ghia Design Studio in Turin. After 11 years in the
corporate environment, he left Ford to help start TWR design with Tom
Walkinshaw, where he worked on the design of the Aston Martin DB7 and
Vanquish as well as designs for Volvo, Mazda and Nissan.
In 1999, Callum was appointed Design Director at Jaguar, where he was
involved in the 2006 XK, 2008 XF, the C-XF concept car and the 2010 XJ.
These models reflect CallumÔÇÖs philosophy that, ÔÇ£Jaguars should be perceived
as cool cars and cool cars attract interesting, edgy people.ÔÇØ
The host Virginia Jaguar Club is honored to welcome Ian Callum to the
JCNA Challenge Championship.
Also attending will be Jaguar Land Rover North America President Andy Goss and Dave Kinney of the
Hagerty Price Guide who will share their insights on Jaguars and the collector car market.
The Challenge Championship is expected to attract Jaguars and Jaguar owners from around the U.S., Canada and
Mexico for JCNA points events that include a Rally, Slalom and Concours dÔÇÖElegance,
as well as scenic tours, informative talks, new car and product displays, a silent
auction and banquets centered around the Wyndham Virginia Crossings Resort
is an AAA 4-Diamond facility with luxury accommodations and
ambiance as well as excellent cuisine.
The Challenge Championship is close to historic and scenic attractions including Civil
War and Revolutionary War battlefields and museums, cultural attractions such as the
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and numerous opportunities for shopping, dining and
sightseeing. Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Washington, D.C., Charlottesville
and the Blue Ridge Mountains are all less than two hours away.
