I recently purchased a jag at an unhesrd of price. The only major problem i have is that the trans only works in reverse. the shifter is smooth but only reverse engages do i need a new trans?

There isn't such a thing as an unheard of price. There are Jaguar's you can have for free...
Check your transmission cable, it may be either loose or too tight. You might be able to adjust it so that you can engage a forward gear. Failing that, you can bring it to your mechanic to diagnose the problem.
