I have owned a 1986 XJ6 4.2 in the past and recalled the oil capacity to be 8 quarts. When I had the oil changed on this 1980 4.2 the company only put in 6 quarts and declared it full. I am concerned that the dipstick is either wrong or the stop had broken loose and been rewelded. Any feedback would be appreciated. This car shows 78000 on the odometer and after 600 miles on the oil change the oil is still perfectly clear and has not dropped at all.

I Own A 1974 XJ6 4.2 Saloon Series 2

Gday Donald i agree with what john has said some oil does remain in various parts of the engine and cooler.
The specifications for the oil capacity is 8.25 litres / 14.5 Imp. pints / 17.5 us. pints.
When doig a service only use 3/4 of quantities listed because of the reason stated above.
Have a good day.

A fair amount of the oil will stay behind when you drain it Don. The oil lines and cooler will account for some as will the galleys in the crank, tappet areas in the head and such. Keep an eye on the dipstick and you should be fine.
